What point is a ‘best photo’ that is sitting in a hard drive unused? Since the recent revolution in digital photography people are taking 10 times as many photos as they did with film – just because it’s free – or so they think. It actually cost quite a lot to keep buying new computers, new printers, more ink cartridges and update your software. It is false to think of it as free and what’s more it takes a lot of time to sort through those 10 times as many photos to find the best ones and then get them printed. Most people do not bother, it’s just too hard so Hard drives end up with tens of thousands of images floating around and the best ones are never retrieved and used. This compact illustrated guide packed with useful facts, cross-sections, easy-to-digest information and suggested side trips will enhance your experience on the trail. A book to buy before the trip and to use as you do the trail. The first section explains why Central Otago is so special, with an overview of natural history – geology, climate, plants and animals. Photos help bikers identify the common plants and animals. The human history is equally fascinating – the first travellers, the squatters, the discovery of gold and the building of the Otago Central Railway on which the trail is built. The cross-sections of each part of the trail along with maps of main towns and surrounding areas make it easy for ‘trail trippers’ to plan their movements.
Travelling Light and Long Long and Light – the way of the Dirt Brevet By Simon Kennett, as published in NZ MTBer There’s a new style of mountain biking slowly spreading across the globe – call it a dirt brevet, bikepacking, or fat tyre randoneering if you like. It doesn’t matter. It’s about travelling light and covering big distances. Eighty kilometres a day is good for a starter; 250 kilometres isn’t out of the question.
