They were given by their sister, Mrs. J D Orbell and dedicated on Sunday 24 February 1976 by the Rev. Nolan Martin, on the occasion of the centenary of the church building. The windows depict three parts of the story of St Paul. In Acts chapter 9 verse 4, ‘Paul as he came near Damascus, heard the voice of Jesus, “Why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the pricks.”’ Paul is down on his knees, shading his eyes from the bright heavenly light with his right arm, and his left arm is raised towards heaven. He has accepted the Christian faith. Next, Paul, dressed in scarlet, with his hands resting on the hilt of his sword, has now joined his disciples. This event is vividly depicted in the final window. Dressed in brown prison garb, arms outspread as he prays to God for deliverance. This, the latest group of stained glass windows, with its stylized background depicts a modern approach and differs vastly from the traditional allegorical interpretation of religious themes in the earlier church windows. The windows were designed by Beverley Shore Bennett and executed by Mr. Roy Miller of Miller Studios of Dunedin From the book –‘A Treasure Trove of Memories’ Written by Harold J Coker 2012 (Harold turned 90 in 2015) Nelson Cathedral – Roy Miller’s windows Nelson Cathedral – several windows by Roy – but some by Paul – Paul Hutchins made the Rose window St John’s Roslyn Anglican Church – Highgate – Dunedin – FVE Ellis #046 – Anunciation window Chalmers Presbyterian Church Timaru – Not sure if all the Saint windows are by Roy ??
