Ralph Miller was a talented Dunedin artist who died in 1956 at the young age of 37. He left over 1000 sketches and artworks, most have been kept in the family for decades, some artworks are in galleries. A wide selection of Ralph Miller’s sketches and paintings are reproduced in this book, presented within the context of his life and the events and the artistic people who influenced him. His career involved working as a designer/signwriter for the family firm, O G Millers and sons (now Miller Studios), and he had a pen and brush in his hand from very early days. But it was the downtime during his war service in the Pacific Islands that gave him time to pursue his greatest love – drawing people. This book for the first time shows the quality and extent of his work, scenes of a serviceman’s life in the Pacific as well as the Dunedin street scenes now have real historical value.
